ALEX NIGGEMANN

MONSTER DNA LAUNCH AT NICCI BEACH WITH

ALEX NIGGEMANN

Review Frozen in Time & Space by

“Time Traveller KK”

Alex Niggemann #Alex Niggemann

After an incredibly long Saturday I was up at the crack of noon feeling rougher than a bear’s ass in pineapple season expecting to live out the day horizontally on my couch when I remembered I had to go to Nicci Beach for the Alex Niggemann. Unimpressed at the notion of having to walk any further than my bathroom this was going be hard but I decided to man up and make my way there. A pizza and a few Red Bulls later I arrived at Nicci Beach with Vanessa Holliday already kicking some deep grooves and I was not quite operating at optimum level.

Only solution was to fortify my self with some ‘knowledge’ juice. Found a table out on the deck and chilled with Anthony (A.B from household Funk) and some other friends. Then Keren Onay took over. Some of a few things I learned at Nicci Beach is that there are douche bags aplenty with the latest in douche bag technology and a disturbingly large collection of vests and tight shorts, there are some extremely beautiful women there wearing the shoes that can only be described as shoe porn. Guy Herman was up next and he was bringing the thunder, both literally and metaphorically speaking as the clouds began to look rather ominous. After hitting the floor for a while I saw something that made my day. All the day glow colours, the tight vests, the impossibly short shorts on girl an impossibly stupid hairstyle and a girl who spent what looked like hours getting ready only to forget to comb her hair and there were 2 friends dressed in exact opposites, the one’s shirt matched the other’s shorts and vice versa. Despite their denials these two guys were sooo deep in the closet they may as well have been in Narnia.

By the time we stopped talking nonsense Alex Niggemann was well into his set when we decided to revisit the floor. His set was one to remember with an interesting style that dropped low and dirty  then bangers only to bring it up with some slow and beautiful grooves. He did rock the sh*t out of Nicci Beach and I would have regretted missing this one.

later on in the evening we got to hang out with and inter view Alex Niggemann who is really just a nice guy who loves a party,  have fun and is funny, so nice that you really want nothing but the best for the guy, as exciting and fun as Alex’s company was we couldn’t help but to get back to the floor and listen to Household Funk’s A.B. and Les Afrique break it down, another winner they delivered. So happy am I right now as write this and have frozen these memories in Time & Space.

DK Expressions and the Time Travellers would like to thank Vanessa Holliday and Lara Rall of Younique Concepts for making this  day turn out to be anything but the nightmare I thought it would be.

1 on 1 Interviews with the Vanessa Holliday,

VANESSA HOLLIDAY:

A surprisingly shy Vanessa Holliday agreed to join us for a brief interview.

KK: Who do you think is an up and coming dj or act we should look out for?

VH: I’m a really big fan of Digging for Dodge

KK: Who’s your favourite Ninja Turtle?

VH: Leonardo

KK: Are you for or against hooking up with groupies?

VH: No. I mean you can’t just hook up with some one like that, but on the other hand you could fall in love with someone on the dance floor just from a look or a connection. I’m not like that.

KK: Hottest guy ever?

VH: Uuuuummmm.. can i get back to you on that?

KK: What are you up to at the moment?
VH: Well I’ll be releasing my first EP round about June and looking to release an album by the end of the year. I’ll also be going to London very soon, looking to play there and make some connections, then I’ll be in Germany playing until about June/July.

KK: Who’s your favourite local dj or act

VH: Ryan Murgatroyd is definitely our best producer.

KK: Hottest guy ever? Brad Pitt? Chase Crawford? Johnny Depp? Alexander Skarssgard? Zach Efron?

VH: Ooh ooh yes. Johnny Depp for sure!

KK: And your favourite international?

VH: (after a long pause) Geez like, there’s too many to name but off the top of my head I’ll have to say Alex Niggemann, he’s a really good producer.

KK: With the advent of Traktor and whatnot where do you sit on issues of more recent djs syncing tracks and not really knowing how to even beat match, do you think the art of mixing is dying?

VH: No, I mean I know a lot of djs sync tracks but a lot of people are bring their A game and it’s not only about mixing, It’s also about track selection so I would say mixing is not dying but evolving.

AB & LES (HOUSEHOLD FUNK)

Caught up in between drinks for a funny interview with our boys AB and Les Afrique

from HOUSEHOLD FUNK.

KK: What drives your mixes?

AB: Deep,sexy, intelligent house music

KK: Who do you think is an up and coming dj or act we should look out for?
(long pause)

hahahaha. Are you guys stoned?

AB: No man, piss off. It’s just that there’s so many. Ja, Digging for Dodge are cool.

KK: Who’s your favourite Ninja Turtle?

Les: (after much debate, disagreement and laughter) Donatello definitely

KK: Are you for or against hooking up with groupies?

AB: Ah. For it for sure! hahahaha. Partying with me has worked for you before.
KK: Your hottest woman alive?

Les: Oooof. Hard one.

KK: What about Kate Beckinsale, Amber Heard, Rhona Mitra, Jennifer Esposito, Candice Boucher?

AB: Yes. That Esposito one is a winner. Spin City!

KK: When was your favourite holiday ever?

AB: Two years ago, Cape Town, HOUSEHOLD FUNK TOUR.

Les: What? Are you frikking mad? Last year bro. Tommorowland.

AB: Oh yes. HOUSEHOLD FUNK at Tomorrowland!

KK: How on earth do you forget about Tomorrowland?

AB: Shut up man. You’re putting me under pressure with your left field questions.

KK: Favourite local dj or producer?

Les: Producer it’s definitely Murgatroyd

AB: Eish. hard one. Wait, Vimo’s the shit

Les: Definitely

KK: What are you up to at the moment?

Les: We’re busy putting together our album. It’s gonna be released at the end of the year ready for Summer.

KK: Got a name for it yet?

AB: Yussuss. What’s with you and the questions?
KK: It is an interview bro (cue hysterical laughter all round).

KK: With the advent of Traktor and whatnot where do you sit on issues of more recent djs syncing tracks and not really knowing how to even beat match, do you think the art of mixing is dying?

AB & Les: For sure. We started out on vinyl. You know. You HAD to learn how to beat match, and develop from there. Sure there’s track selection too but that’s how you got your ear in. There’s definitely a lack of technical skill nowadays.

Alex Niggemann

After a rocking set we got hang out with Alex Niggemann and slip in a quick interview.

KK: Who do you think is an up and coming dj or act we should look out for?

AN: I’m a really big fan of  Francys

KK: Who’s your favourite Ninja Turtle?

AN: Raphael, that’s cos he’s the only one I know hahaha

KK: Are you for or against hooking up with groupies?

AN: hahahaha. I’m not answering that

KK: What are you up to at the moment?

AN: I’m launching my new label Aeon and I’m touring and playing as much as I can because I’ve found that a lot of people know me more for my production and seem to have forgot that I was a DJ first.

(we pause for more drinking and pose for photos)

KK: What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve done that you’ve never told another dj?

AN: Really?

KK: Yup.

AN: Okay, I was playing at  Club Sonar in Spain a few years ago and I can’t remember if the toilets were full or whatever but I really needed to pee so I peed next to this car and was chased by two Spanish policeman and ended up paying a 180 Euro fine.

KK: Well if it comes to that we’ll have none of that here. You can pee in a cup in the corner while I keep lookout.

AN: hahahahahaha So you’ve got my back?

KK: For damn sure. it’ll make for an even better story.

KK: Your favourite holiday ever?

AN: Two years ago we went camping on an island with no cellphone signal, no power, no running water. Just you and nature. Ah man it was a beautiful time!

KK: With the advent of Traktor and whatnot where do you sit on issues of more recent djs syncing tracks and not really knowing how to even beat match, do you think the art of mixing is dying?

AN: I grew up with vinl and remember waiting outside the record store before opening to get my hands on the newest white labels and so on, in today’s times with Beatport and Soundcloud and the immediate availability of music to almost anyone it’s that much harder to be unique and have music other djs don’t have. This is why a basic foundation like beat matching is necessary to expand on your mixing skill which is what is necessary to stand out from other djs. So yes, to an extent I do think the art of mixing is dying.

KK: That’s it then. Thanks for an amazing set.

AN: A pleasure and Thanks for asking different questions and making me laugh. These guys are good let’s go party! (off we went to enjoy Household Funk)

360 000lb stage

7200 wheels

Over 4 500, the number of shows the band leader has performed in a row not missing one

3 000 pieces of costume

3 000 pairs of shoes

182 loads, that’s 26 loads of washing in 7 washing machines

110 stage technicians

50 performers

1 show

On the way to the afternoon practice session I was quite excited having never seen Cirque Du Soleil. We got to the MTN Dome, exchanged pleasantries with the other journo’s, then felt about as manly as an 18 year old girl watching Titanic while she’s ovulating and realise we REALLY need to start working out again as the wonderful Dionne from The Publicity Workshop recounted her experience of competing in and finishing The Warrior race while an impossibly buff and ripped dude who could’ve had the decency to put a shirt on did some rather impressive stunts with his mighty fine partner on ropes hanging from the gantry. We then met Julie from Cirque Du Soleil who gave us an incredibly detailed account of the history of the circus, sets, set design, costumes, performers and crew. The woman really knows her job! Having arrived late we only managed to catch some performers practising some insane things on the trampolines before we were shooed out by a hilarious Dionne telling us we’ll see it all in the show later that evening. I wish I was even remotely prepared for what I was about to see… Dralion is a mind bending experience of unbelievable human feats. My inner 9 year old would be steering the ship from here on in. Immediately we were sucked into the world of Dralion. The attention to detail was amazing. From the make-up (which was done by the performers themselves) to the costumes to the Chinese temple stage. Acts that stood out for me were the trampoline troupe who wowed us with their superior spatial awareness, twists, double and even triple somersaults quite literally all over the show. The Bamboo act was also nothing to be scoffed at with some of the most impressive. I badly want a pair of those pants. What stole the show for me was the Medusa act with the 6 acrobats performing feats of unnatural bendiness, strength, and balance generally making you say “Yoh!!” I thought to myself if I had seen this show in my varsity days when I was an avid enthusiast of the green it probably would’ve blown my mind. Then I realised that I don’t know what I’m talking about, my mind was blown and I was dead sober!  What an amazing show.  A show for the whole family, lovers, mates and especially stoners. Get yourselves some tickets through www.bigconcerts.co.za and show runs through to Saturday March 30th 2013.

HOLI ONE CAPE TOWN

“Three, two, one, HAPPY HOLI” echoed through Cape Town last yesterday as 10,000 excited festival fans threw their coloured powder into the air in unison at South Africa’s first ever colour festival, HOLI ONE.

The iconic venue, Grand Parade, was transformed with brilliant hues at the sold-out event as thousands of revellers all dressed in white rediscovered their inner child; running through the square pelting each other with handfuls of green, pink, blue, orange and yellow powder.

The impressive electronic music line-up further thrilled revellers with energetic beats from international DJ sensation Super Flu and local funk legends such as Toby2Shoes and Kid Fonque.  As the sun set and the backdrop of Table Mountain was illuminated against the night sky, the crowd’s energy soared and hands went up into the air to the explosive live performance by dance trio GoodLuck.  The master of drum ‘n bass, Niskerone concluded the night’s entertainment as the exhilarated masses filed out of the venue with a spring in their step and a smile on their exhausted, colour-streaked faces.

Being such a visual experience, social media engagement was unprecedented throughout the day with huge volumes of posting, sharing, liking and tagging.

Hailed as THE new festival of the year, this unique concept and exceptionally executed event was launched by award-winning agency Seed Experiences – the company behind the hugely successful Rocking the Daisies Festival.
